Beards and Broadswords is an internet radio show hosted by Metallic Joe. It started as an idea in 2012 for the then upcoming launch of Riffline Radio. We officially launched on February 12, 2013 and opened our show with Bathory’s “Blood Fire Death”. Doing two shows a week, we blasted our listeners’ eardrums with the best folk/viking/pagan/black metal bands and played all ranges of the genre from the bouncy folk tunes of Korpiklaani to the more extreme Opera IX and Dark Fortress.
The daily grind of working an unforgiving shift at work and differences on station direction with the rest of the staff sunk the show after an epic finale on August 29, 2013. Metallic Joe continued on with a video game-themed podcast in 2016.
In 2019, after spending a year listening again to the newer folk metal bands emerging (as well as the classics in the genre), Metallic Joe resurrected Beards and Broadswords on Metal Devastation Radio! The show airs 1-3 AM Sunday EST and plays mostly everything from tame to extreme in the folk metal genre!
Metallic Joe is my name. I’m based on the East Coast US. I’ve been listening to metal since I was a kid in 1989 and folk metal since 2002. I started my metal journey with a Metallica cassette and evolved my metal tastes into newer bands ever since. In 2002 I found Finntroll’s “Jaktens Tid” album and Moonsorrow soon after. I was hooked.
I’ve been to a good amount of shows over the years including all three Heathen Crusades in Minnesota, which was the festival that brought folk metal to the US for the first time. Also been to Wacken a few times and got to travel for the first time to Finland in 2019 for a black metal fest.
I’m so glad to have witnessed the US debuts of Thyrfing, Moonsorrow, Primordial, Skyforger, Bal-Sagoth, Månegarm, Ancient Rites, Metsatöll, Vreid, and many others.
Metal is forever and this music just flat out connects to me like a lot of metalheads will cry out! Cheers \m/
